The Wild, Wild East
Join film critic/historian and all-around swell guy Lance Goldenberg as he sets the controls for the heart of darkness, touring the wonderful and frightening world of Eastern European cinema.
This multi-media event will explore the roots and applications of Eastern Europe comedies, where satire is frequently far more unsettling than what were used to, and humor often a means of exorcizing totalitarian demons. Incorporating extended film clips from a number of astonishing Eastern European films that are almost impossible to see in this country, this presentation ranges from Romania to Slovakia to Hungary to the Czech Republic to fragments of the former republic of Yugoslavia.
Thrill to the pop-art wackiness of Who Killed Jesse and Dusan Hanaks Pictures of the Old World! Gasp at the grotesque gags of Lucian Pintilies The Oak and the surreal delights of Jan Nemecs The Party and the Guests! Cower before the Sheer Oddness of Miklos Jancsos Lords Lantern in Budapest and Vera Chytilovas Daisies!
