Director Garrett Brown, age 18, is in his senior year in the TV/film production department at Blake High School in Tampa, Florida.
For years he has been entertaining his family, friends and fellow students with humorous short films, often but not always showcasing his hand-hewn claymation characters. His first short film, "Bad Day", featuring the ever-popular Murray in a comic look at a day gone wrong was shown as part of the 2006 Junior Independent Film Festival. The 2007 JIFF saw him feature the further comic travails of Murray in "Leave Me Alone".
His next movie, "The Last One", was a departure from the comic claymation genre, touching on the symbolic world of the morbid and surreal. This claymation short first aired at the Tampa Film Review in the summer of 2008, winning film of the evening. It was then selected to be aired later that year as one of the top five films at the Tampa Film Review's Five Year Retrospective.
"The Last One" was subsequently aired at multiple film festivals including Gasparilla, Independents Film Festival, the Motion Film Festival and the South Beach Animation Fest. In 2009, Brown was awarded a Rising Star award at the Tampa Bay Video Awards.
Brown's most recent claymation short, "What Lurks in the Dark", explores one man's struggle with his inner thoughts. With an interior monologue as narration, the film reveals the night-long despair of one man as he protects his family from the menacing evil which waits just outside his cabin door.
Already receiving much buzz from its debut showing at the 2009 IFF and subsequent viewing at the 2010 Gasparilla Film Festival, this newest film promises to be Brown's deepest and most thought-provoking thriller yet.
