"Journeys in the Kingdom of Shadows: the Life and Times of Will Hindle" is a reality-based film about the highly influential film artist Will Hindle, whose work help fuel the development of a school of filmmaking known as "The Personal Film".
Hindle taught personal filmmaking with the passion of a prophet, chiefly in the Art Department of the University of South Florida, where he powerfully influenced generations of students, his fellow professors, and the course of film art generally.
In the days of the Russian Revolution, when all things were in dangerous flux, and a new world, for better or worse, was in the bloody and convulsive process of being born, the Russian poet Gorky wandered into the first cinema theatre in Moscow. He emerged shaken, because he had seen moving light and shadow recorded and reproduced before his eyes.
As a poet he was accustomed to creating images in his reader's mind using written words. Now suddenly he literally saw the boundless possibility of reversing the process, and using moving images to tell stories.
He told his friends "I have been in the Kingdom of Shadows".
It is just that spirit of boundless, expanding wonder, which Will sought in each of his amazing films, and which he fired in the minds of lucky students and colleagues.
About the Filmmakers
Both Charles Lyman, who realized this film (production, writing, direction and photography) and Peter Melaragno who edited it at Atlantic and Pacific Productions, were colleagues of Will Hindle in the USF Cine Department. Both will be present during discussions of the film.
